Presented by Canterbury Shakespeare Festival
Measure for Measure is one of Shakespeare’s “problem plays” and oscillates wildly between comedy and drama.
The central plot unfolds around the Duke of Vienna leaving his city and leaving the draconian Angelo to oversee the city in his stead.
Angelo implements outdated laws, making sex before marriage punishable by death. When Isabella’s brother Claudio is imprisoned for such a crime, Claudio begs Isabella to go to Angelo and try to save his life. Angelo agrees to let Claudio live, but only if Isabella sleeps with Angelo.
The central themes of the play are moral absolutism, justice, lust, religiosity, and social politics.
Tickets are free but please book in advance.
