    On 15 July 2017, Gulbenkian hosted the UPRISING event and the launch of the ART31 Commitment to Children and Young People. You can download a pdf version of the Commitment here.

    Over the past few years, ART31 has been working to create a change of culture, by inspiring arts organisations to change the way they work and make a promise to develop an exciting and innovative offer of the highest quality with, by and for young people. This work has resulted in the development of the ART31 Commitment, a series of positive statements that ART31 are asking all arts organisations in Kent to sign up to.

    This ground-breaking Commitment has evolved through a series of conversations over the last two years between young people and arts organisations across Kent, and is driven by a shared desire for an improved cultural offer.

    Key to the development of ART31 and the Commitment has been the support of Kent County Council, and Mike Hill OBE, Cabinet Member for Community and Regulatory Services was at UPrising to take part in the launch:

    “Kent County Council is proud to work alongside ART31 and is committed to supporting its ongoing development.

    Over the last 5 years and because of ART31, nearly 10,000 children and young people across the county have been empowered to realise their own creative potential and have had hundreds of amazing opportunities made available to them. As a result of this, young people are now positioning themselves confidently at the heart of cultural decision making in Kent.

    ART31 will now work with the Kent cultural sector to adopt and implement the Commitment.”

    Also speaking at UPrising was the Chief Executive of Arts Council England, Darren Henley, who announced that Arts Council have committed funding for ART31 until 2022.

    ART31

    ART31 takes its name from Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of a Child, which states that ‘Children have the right to relax and play, and to join in a wide range of cultural, artistic and other recreational activities’.

    ART31 is a vision created with, by, and for young people in Kent, championing the belief that all children and young people have an entitlement to access high quality arts and culture, to empower them to achieve their creative potential, and to genuinely engage young people as equal partners in any decision making that affects them.

    The ART31 Youth Board is made up of young people from across Kent aged 13-25 who steer its governance, and influence policy and practice across the county and beyond, challenging the creative sector to examine existing ways of working and integrate young people into the core of their practice.

    ART31 Generate

    ART31 Generate is made up of young people from across Kent aged 13-25. They steer ART31's governance, influence arts policy and practice, and programme the annual GENFest Youth Takeover Festival.

    Youth Theatre

    Fantastic and fun sessions for ages 13-18 years, encouraging creativity and theatre-making skills.

    SCREEN31

    Screen31 is a group for young people aged 15-25 interested in developing their film-making skills.

    TECH31

    TECH31 provides free practical training in technical theatre for ages 13 - 25

    National Theatre Connections – Gulbenkian Young Company

    NT Connections is the National Theatre’s nationwide youth theatre festival. Each year it offers a unique opportunity for youth theatres and school theatre groups to stage new plays written for young people by some of theatre’s most exciting playwrights, and to perform in leading theatres across the UK.
