Canterbury Shakespeare Festival presents...
Set at the turn of the 20th Century in Russia, The Cherry Orchard explores themes of cultural futility, the rise of the middle class and the decline of aristocracy. Widely regarded as a classic of modern theatre, Anton Chekhov’s wonderful text has been translated by Charlotte Groombridge for this production by the Canterbury Shakespeare Festival. It tells the story of an aristocratic Russian family who are forced to sell their estate, including its famous cherry orchard, to pay off their debts. The play is a tragicomedy that explores themes of social change and generational conflict.
