Henry is a young, ineffectual king, ruled over by the noble but argumentative Lord Protector, Gloucester. At least to begin with. Henry VI tells the story of Gloucester’s downfall, orchestrated by Henry’s wife, Margaret, and her lover, Suffolk. And Henry’s problems only spiral with the ongoing war with French forces, headed by Joan of Arc. The young lord York also discovers his claim to the throne, and the seeds of the Wars of the Roses are sown. Made up of Henry VI Part i and Part ii, this newly edited version brings the complex politics of Shakespeare’s text to the fore.
