Youth Theatre & Gulbenkian Theatre Makers

The Youth Theatre offers free weekly theatre sessions on Wednesday evenings, open to all young people aged 13-18 years and all abilities. There is a focus on creativity, building confidence, developing skills, and making new friends along the way.

Gulbenkian Theatre Makers gives young people aged 18-25 opportunities to perform, learn, make friends and have fun. GTM meet Monday evenings and work on developing theatre making skills, play games and perform. People of all abilities and courses are welcome.

National Theatre Connections

As a partner theatre venue, each year we facilitate an auditioned cast and backstage crew aged 13-19 to create their own production for the National Theatre Connections Festival, performing at Gulbenkian and another partner theatre.

Student Committee for the Arts

The student committee at Gulbenkian Arts Centre is a chance to meet new people, network with artists and industry professional and try yourself as an ambassador, programmer and events organiser. This committee is for University of Kent students.

ART31 Generate

ART31 Generate gives young people aged 13-25 the opportunity to participate in workshops, showcase work, and learn directly from local and international artists, connecting with young creatives to try something new! Generate gives voice to young perspectives, through theatre, film, music, visual arts and more!

Work Experience

We offer a few spaces for work experience placements at Gulbenkian for students aged 16+. The focus of the placements is mainly administrative, with a chance to shadow staff working in Creative Engagement, Marketing, Front of House, Box Office and Technical.

SCREEN31

SCREEN31 is a series of workshops for young people aged 15-25 interested in film making. Members get the chance to develop filmmaking and editing skills at sessions led by a professional filmmaker in Canterbury and Medway.

TECH31

TECH31 provides free practical training in Technical Theatre for ages 13 – 25. The programme explores skills in sound, lighting, stage management and more in Canterbury, while Medway workshops unlock the world of digital creative technology.

Medway

Docking Station our new facility for Medway is a unique hub for industry-standard production technologies including virtual production and motion capture enabling local businesses, students and communities to develop new skills in immersive technologies and supporting the digital creative industries in Medway and the region. ART31

ART31 takes its name from Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of a Child, which states that ‘Children have the right to relax and play, and to join in a wide range of cultural, artistic and other recreational activities’.

ART31 is a vision created with, by, and for young people in Kent, championing the belief that all children and young people have an entitlement to access high quality arts and culture, to empower them to achieve their creative potential, and to genuinely engage young people as equal partners in any decision making that affects them.

The ART31 Youth Board is made up of young people from across Kent aged 13-25 who steer its governance, and influence policy and practice across the county and beyond, challenging the creative sector to examine existing ways of working and integrate young people into the core of their practice.
