Red Rebel FM and the Institute of Cultural and Creative Industries (ICCI) at the University of Kent are launching a Youth Radio Project for 15–19 year olds — and we’re looking for young FLINTA people to get involved.

Do you identify as Female or Gender Diverse? and are you curious about radio, podcasting, music or interviewing people? This is the workshop for you!

You’ll learn how to:

  • Use microphones and recording equipment
  • Plan and present your own radio show
  • Choose music and structure a broadcast
  • Interview guests and each other
  • Record and produce your own show
  • You’ll work across a series of relaxed workshops to create your own recorded radio show, which will be aired on our radio station as part of the project.

PLUS in August, we’ll also take part in the annual Boing Festival, where participants will help host a youth radio hub, interview artists and festival guests and celebrate the work created during the workshops.

No experience needed — just curiosity, creativity and an interest in radio, music or storytelling.

Session overview:

Session 1 – Introduction + Radio History + Studio Basics/Mic Skills
We explore a short, interactive history of radio (from early broadcasting to pirate and community radio), followed by hands-on microphone practice and confidence-building speaking exercises.

Session 2 – Music, Structure + Building a Show
Participants explore how music shapes radio, learn basic show structure, and begin planning radio shows.

Session 3 – Interview Skills + Show Development
Focus on interview techniques, question writing and refining show plans in preparation for recording.

Session 4 – Recording + Sharing
Participants record a group show together, with different roles for each. The show will then be prepared for broadcast on Red Rebel FM.

ART31

ART31 takes its name from Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of a Child, which states that ‘Children have the right to relax and play, and to join in a wide range of cultural, artistic and other recreational activities’.

ART31 is a vision created with, by, and for young people in Kent, championing the belief that all children and young people have an entitlement to access high quality arts and culture, to empower them to achieve their creative potential, and to genuinely engage young people as equal partners in any decision making that affects them.

The ART31 Youth Board is made up of young people from across Kent aged 13-25 who steer its governance, and influence policy and practice across the county and beyond, challenging the creative sector to examine existing ways of working and integrate young people into the core of their practice.
