    • The Gulbenkian Student Committee for the Arts presents:

    Celebrating new writing and theatre by emerging artists!

    Scratch Night is an evening of celebrating new writing, showcasing two 20-minute plays and three 5-minute readings of new writing on the Platform Stage. Student run and open to all, it is a place for exploration and celebrating the creative process of bringing writing onto the stage. Join us on Thursday May 14 for Summer Term Scratch Night!

    It’s Only a Beautiful Party, written by Liz Paige and directed by Andy Varga

    A black comedy about authoritarian regimes, whimsy and how awkward parties are. In this opening extract roommates Caro and Everin begin to organise a party despite state rules limiting social interaction. But when their guests arrive, are they everything that the girls had hoped for?

    Liz is a playwright and theatremaker based in Folkestone. She is a co-founder of Rebel Streak Productions where she will be directing its debut production Collarbone later this year.

    Andy is an emerging theatremaker and facilitator based in Canterbury. A Drama and Theatre graduate from the University of Kent, she combines creative practice with hands-on experience in arts programming and venue operations as part of her work at the Gulbenkian Arts Centre.

    Delores, Cosmo and Stanley, written by Liz Jennings and directed by Azaria Gayle

    Delores wants to be playing sudoku in a conservatory somewhere far, far away: instead she’s stuck in a soft play centre with her wild grandson, Cosmo, wondering what the coating on Wotsits is and getting pelted with balls. The last thing she expects is romance, and when it comes, it catches everyone unawares.

    Liz lives in Canterbury and is a creative practitioner running writing groups with people with a diagnosis of dementia. She is the author of three collections of short stories and was featured in Lincoln University’s Women Writing Lockdown project.

    Azaria is a Drama and Film student at the University of Kent and an emerging theatre practitioner, soon to graduate. I am currently working as an Assistant Director with the Gulbenkian as part of the National Theatre Connections Festival, collaborating with the youth theatre in Canterbury.

    5-minute readings by Meg Fulton, Henry Allen-Taylor and a guest performer.

    ART31

    ART31 takes its name from Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of a Child, which states that ‘Children have the right to relax and play, and to join in a wide range of cultural, artistic and other recreational activities’.

    ART31 is a vision created with, by, and for young people in Kent, championing the belief that all children and young people have an entitlement to access high quality arts and culture, to empower them to achieve their creative potential, and to genuinely engage young people as equal partners in any decision making that affects them.

    The ART31 Youth Board is made up of young people from across Kent aged 13-25 who steer its governance, and influence policy and practice across the county and beyond, challenging the creative sector to examine existing ways of working and integrate young people into the core of their practice.

    Screen31 is a group for young people aged 15-25 interested in developing their film-making skills.

    Set over two days TECH31 is a free workshop designed to provide 13-25 year olds with an opportunity to develop their skills in sound, lighting, stage management and much more. 

    National Theatre Connections – Gulbenkian Young Company

    NT Connections is the National Theatre’s nationwide youth theatre festival. Each year it offers a unique opportunity for youth theatres and school theatre groups to stage new plays written for young people by some of theatre’s most exciting playwrights, and to perform in leading theatres across the UK.
