Gulbenkian closed from 5.30pm on Wed 28 Jan

We are closed for a private event this Wednesday evening. We are open again as usual from Thursday.

Presented by Folk in the Barn

Shindell is a writer whose songs paint pictures, tell stories, juxtapose ideas and images, inhabit characters, vividly evoking entire worlds along the way and expanding our sense of just what it is a song may be.

Richard Shindell lives as both an immigrant and emigrant, crossing thresholds, that informs his illumination of the human experience through narrative song.

Shindell has inhabited a Zen Buddhist monastery, busked in the streets of Paris, opened for Joan Baez (who covered several of his songs), and collaborated with Grammy-winner Larry Campbell (Bob Dylan, Levon Helm, Elvis Costello).

Originally from New York, now living in Buenos Aires, Argentina, Shindell is innovative, original and occasionally spiritual. Shindell’s songs weave tales that interchangeably champion the downtrodden, exalt the disaffected or wax empathetic to those lost to society’s fringes. From lighthearted ballads and adulterous love songs, to dirges and diatribes that skillfully skewer politics, prejudice, war and religion, he has a unique ability to morph into the soul of the many and varied personalities he casts as narrators in certain songs—veritable novellas framed in haunting acoustic melodies.

If you haven’t heard of his name, you will know his songs. Reunion Hill, You Stay Here, The Next Best Western have all been covered by the likes of Fairport Convention, Show of Hands etc.

Danny Bradley is a beautifully talented finger-style guitarist and songwriter who recently toured to great acclaim as the opening act for Richard Thompson, and Fairport Convention, on their respective UK tours. 2025 also saw Danny a Grand Prize winner of the John Lennon Songwriting Contest.

Danny’s debut solo album, ‘Small Talk Songs’, was recorded in his Liverpool city centre flat, with three microphones. Throughout the recording process, he opened the door to his little fifth-floor balcony, so that the songs of the Scouse seagulls overhead could be heard lilting quietly in the background of this airy, richly recorded acoustic album.

ART31

ART31 takes its name from Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of a Child, which states that ‘Children have the right to relax and play, and to join in a wide range of cultural, artistic and other recreational activities’.

ART31 is a vision created with, by, and for young people in Kent, championing the belief that all children and young people have an entitlement to access high quality arts and culture, to empower them to achieve their creative potential, and to genuinely engage young people as equal partners in any decision making that affects them.

The ART31 Youth Board is made up of young people from across Kent aged 13-25 who steer its governance, and influence policy and practice across the county and beyond, challenging the creative sector to examine existing ways of working and integrate young people into the core of their practice.
