Could you become a chaperone at Gulbenkian?

7 Jan 2025

Can you help us by becoming a Chaperone at Gulbenkian?

We are looking for a pool of volunteers to help chaperone upcoming productions and events at the Gulbenkian Arts Centre. As we are a licensed venue, we have to make sure that any production we put on with young people aged 16 and under, is chaperoned. (This is a legal requirement for all professional and licensed venues).

What is a chaperone?
A chaperone is someone who is 18+, who helps to look after and safeguard young performers in professional and licensed theatres. You would be responsible for a small group of young people between the aged 12-16 whilst they are backstage and performing. When you are a chaperone you get to learn the ins and outs of a professional venue and how they run, and also get to know all the young performers, and make sure they are looked after.

Who are we looking for?
We are looking for students who love theatre, and want to get experience working in a professional venue. We’d love for you to have some experience or knowledge of working with young people, especially those aged (12-16). This role would be perfect for students who want to work in theatre in the future, as it gives you experience in a professional venue that you can then take elsewhere! (It’s worth noting, once you have a chaperone license, you can use it any venue across the country!).

When would you be needed?
• Sunday 16th February – 17:00-21:00 * (Times TBC) at Gulbenkian Arts Centre, Canterbury
• Sunday 9th March – 17:00-21:00 * (Times TBC) at Gulbenkian Arts Centre, Canterbury
• Monday 10th March – 18:00-21:00* (Times TBC) at Gulbenkian Arts Centre, Canterbury
• Sunday 4th May – 09:00-21:00 (Times TBC) at Trinity Theatre, Tunbridge Wells
(There may also be some other dates that occur throughout the year, but the dates above are confirmed performances that we would need commitment for)

Please let us know by Friday 24th January 2025.
Up to 5 vacancies.

ART31

ART31 takes its name from Article 31 of the UN Convention on the Rights of a Child, which states that ‘Children have the right to relax and play, and to join in a wide range of cultural, artistic and other recreational activities’.

ART31 is a vision created with, by, and for young people in Kent, championing the belief that all children and young people have an entitlement to access high quality arts and culture, to empower them to achieve their creative potential, and to genuinely engage young people as equal partners in any decision making that affects them.

The ART31 Youth Board is made up of young people from across Kent aged 13-25 who steer its governance, and influence policy and practice across the county and beyond, challenging the creative sector to examine existing ways of working and integrate young people into the core of their practice.
